Course overview

There are many maladies that affect the geriatric canine in general including loss of lean mass, cognitive decline, and mobility issues. The senior patient has slightly different requirements for feeding and supplementation for these common geriatric issues depending on the pathologies present that often require adjustments in protein, fat, specific fatty acid, and potentially antioxidant intake to help optimize health. As musculoskeletal issues plague many geriatric patients, there are food additives or supplements that can mitigate lean mass loss and potentiate better mobility long term that should be considered.

Course Objectives

  • Understanding the issues around geriatric obesity vs lean mass loss and how feeding practices can mitigate these issues.
  • Understanding how to pick a senior food that best optimizes geriatric longevity.
  • Understanding the interplay between nutritional supplements and foods that can help mitigate cognitive decline.
  • Help the decision processes around using nutraceuticals that may help with mobility issues in geriatric canine patients.

Joseph J. Wakshlag, DVM, PhD, DACVN, DACVSMR

Joseph Wakshlag received his veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1998, which he followed up with a PhD and nutrition residency which were completed in 2006 and 2010, respectively. He became a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2008 while also becoming a diplomate in the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2010.
